An Upcycled Painted Metal Cabinet

You know how sometimes when you are thrifting & you aren’t finding anything interesting? Well, it was one of those days a few weeks ago when I came across this beatup, rusty, little metal cabinet. It had been in a garage for a looong time holding some gardening things. I debated whether or not I even wanted to put it into my car because I was afraid there would be some creepy spider that would crawl out of it.

But I took it home with me anyway and I let it sit in my garage for a few weeks. Eventually I started working on it, sanding off the loose paint and using some Rustoleum to seal the rusty spots.

I’d been wanting to try out my new Finish Max paint sprayer so I went down to the basement to find some leftover latex paint to use on it. Settled on the soft blue color {of my bathroom}, and went to work. I was very surprised at how little overspray there was when using the paint sprayer.

I wanted to turn the front door into a chalkboard so I primed it with some gray paint & then mixed up a batch of DIY Chalkboard Paint.

Basically I used 1 cup of flat latex paint and mix in about 2 tablespoons of non-sanded grout.

After painting that on, you use a fine sandpaper over the top (I used 150 grit).

Wipe it off, take a hunk of chalk and rub it over the entire surface. Wipe that off and you have a ready-to-use chalkboard surface!

Another reason I love this metal cabinet is it’s metal-ness. {you can stick magnets on it!} Whether for decorative use or to hold all of those notes and things that come home from school. I can see this as a cabinet to put all of the papers / pencils / rulers and things that kids use for their homework. Sort of their ‘at home locker’.
